Reading Response Exemplar: Inferencing

Unlike the other Greasers, who are real brothers, I think Johnny and Dally have a special friendship.  I know Johnny comes from an abusive family, is neglected, and is quite anxious.  Dally is cold, has a “savage defiance” towards any law, and is angry at the world.  He does, however, have a soft spot for Johnny.  Dally actually cares about his well-being and is angered about him being hurt, both at home and on the streets, and wants to stand up for him and protect him – this seems out of character for Dally because it seems he only cares about himself.  Johnny respects and idolizes Dally because he marches to the beat of his own drum.  He’s probably the only one that sees some kind of good in Dally that the rest of world wouldn’t even imagine.  For these reasons, I feel they share a special bond.
