Feb 25-Mar 01

This week we are working on the following tasks:

-History Review: French & British colonization, fur trade, Aboriginal alliances, struggle for control

-Science Review: chapter 7 heating (expansion) & cooling (contraction) & particle theory

-Math: new unit Fraction operations; variables & expressions key assessment to be submitted Monday.

-Reading/Health: impact of social media on mental health

-Science Lab balloon expansion contraction to be submitted Tuesday.

-History Presentations New France A Royal Colony begin Tuesday.

-Literacy The Nest pgs3-9 answer all making connections/reflecting questions in complete sentences with supporting reasons.

This week we are working away on:


  • History Prezi - New France, A Royal Colony showcasing these key ideas:  
King Louis 14th took direct control over Champlain's colony and all trading companies
making it a "Royal Colony" - it would be governed just like another province in France.An absolute monarch as unlimited power over all people, over the constitution, over parliament, and over any aristocracy.Talon was the Intendant of New France who managed the day-to-day operations of the Royal Colony.Frontenac was the Governor General of New France and he was the living symbol of King Louis 14th in New France.Laval was the Bishop of New France in charge of the Church, schools, and hospitals.Les filles du roi or King's daughters were young french women who were sent over to New France to increase population by establishing families who would live and work there permanently.The Seigneur was a landlord of the plots of land that ran from the banks of the St Lawrence River.  He managed the land and its Habitants (labourers) that worked the land and reported back to Talon, the Intendant.  The Habitants worked very hard clearing land, building and farming while the Seigneur enjoyed a prestigious statusRoles of ChurchReligious role: spiritual, legal, government, and personal servicesHealth care: hospitals for sick, elderly, orphaned, disabled

Feb 11-14

Math:  continue with variables & expressions unit pgs. 82, 83- and begin knowledgehook mission "variables & expressions" which has been launched and is due in 1 week.


History:  working in a group maximum 3 and using your Canada Revisited responses, begin creating a prezi entitled New France: A Royal Colony showcasing King Louis 14th (Absolute Monarch), his 3 representatives and their roles, and the Seigneurial System.  Refer to this example:

Reading:  be prepared to present your Bud, not Buddy plot diagrams in whatever format you have chosen with an emphasis on 2 well constructed theme paragraphs around the key ideas "sense of belonging, family connection, love" and "growing, nurturing ideas from a seed".


Science: begin lab write up (purpose, hypothesis, observations, analysis) for "try this" text pg.194 expansion/contraction of rubber balloons; group of 2 maximum.

History

History:

Biculturalism or 2 distinct languages and ways of life resulted in early Canada from both French and British settlement and colonization.

Natives helped Europeans develop and expand their fur trading companies in exchange for military help, guns, ammunition, food, clothing, and cooking utensils; it was a mutually beneficial relationship.

The fleur-de-lis was the marque or symbol of the King of France, Louis 14th & 15th.

The centre of French power was located along the Atlantic coast of early Canada at Ile Royale (Cape Breton Island) and Acadia; fortress of Louisbourg.

Louisbourg was an important fortress, royal capital, naval base, and centre of commerce.

To counteract the French's control of the fur trade, the British build a fortress in nearby Halifax surrounded by stockades (wall/barrier) - it became a very powerful base.

The British approached and easily captured the French's Louisbourg fortress and wanted to take over and control their territory in Acadia.  The British also wanted the French to pledge an oath of allegiance to their British King or be deported.
