    Writing:  Explaining a Process

Pick something you like and write about how it’s made.

    For example,

To create the ultimate hamburger, you would follow this sure-proof step-by-step process.

Firstly, you need to consider the meat you will use since it’s the star of the dish.  I would highly recommend a blend of 80% assorted beef cuts (chuck, sirloin, short rib) and 20% fat content from beef brisket.  You don’t want your burger to be too lean – remember that fat is flavour.  Once ground, you want to make a good 8oz patty with your hands and season each side with salt and pepper.  Sear on a flat top for 4 minutes per side to create a crust and keep the centre moist and juicy.  Top with 2 strips of crisp hickory-smoked bacon.

Next, you need to consider the bun – you want an equal ratio of bread to meat.  I would recommend either a salty pretzel bun that’s not too dense or a soft buttery French brioche.

Thirdly, select fresh and crisp romaine lettuce leaves, a thick ripe tomato slice, and/or a tangy pickle slice as your toppings.  Thinking of ketchup or mustard?  Don’t let them overshadow the meat!

Lastly, get into the classic Guy Fieri stance (hunched over the table ensuring the juices don’t run down your arms and onto your shirt) and enjoy the explosion of flavour with your first giant bite.  I guarantee this hamburger is money! Be sure to have plenty of napkins on hand. Bon appetite!

    novel study:

Revise + Edit yesterday’s task of 2 theme paragraphs
    For example:
Throughout his journey to meet his father, Bud has taught me the importance of perseverance.  At no point did Bud stop his quest to reconnect with his family because it defined who he was as a person and gave his life purpose.  Bud needed to feel a sense of belonging, to feel acknowledged and loved, and that he was “home”.  His mother instilled in him this fierce determination i.e. “remember your name is Bud, not Buddy”.  If I want to work towards achieving any goal I set out for myself, then I must realize that it will take the same hard work, patience, and stead-fast determination (perseverance) that Bud demonstrated.

Throughout his journey to meet his father, Bud has taught me the importance of being resourceful.  You cannot go through life without being a creative, innovative, out-of-the-box thinker.  Bud was all these things because his life experiences and interactions prompted him to devise an endless list of rules that offered him either a “way out” of a difficult situation or “a dose of reality” for what adults were really trying to tell him.  Life will always throw obstacles in my way for which I need to find a way to overcome them, just like Bud did.

    Personality Traits of Bud Caldwell
    Supporting Evidence from Text
Bud is sentimental, thoughtful, loving and caring
Bud keeps and carries his momma with him by treasuring all the rocks and flyers in his suitcase that serve as a connection to his family; he fondly recalls everything his momma said and did for him.
    Resourceful, creative, ingenious, intuitive, perceptive
Bud devises a series of rules to deal with “sticky situations” he would find himself in when dealing with adults and trying to find a possible exit/solution; he knows how to “size people up”.

take 2 multiplication/additon and 2 multiplication/subtraction expressions and evaluate them first using multiples to guess/check then balancing using mirror line; if you don't have your sheet then try each of the following 2 ways:
    8p - 7 = 88
    9p + 6 = 114
    7p - 15 = 48
    12p + 7 = 55

    History

The Governor General (Frontenac) was the top official in New France, a living symbol of King Louis 14th in New France; he was responsible for all military planning and Aboriginal relations; he reported to the King.
The Bishop (Laval) was the head of the Church in New France; his Church also ran all schools and hospitals – they had a lot of power (spiritual, education, healthcare)
The Intendant (Talon) was the manager of New France and supervised all law, order, finances & population of New France; he reported to Frontenac.
To increase the population of New France, King Louis 14th sent over les filles du roi, young, single, orphaned females to create families with the workers or engages who also left their mother-country to colonize New France.
Property lots in New France were divided into Seigneuries - long, strips of land running from the shores of the St. Lawrence River into the forests; they were cleared and farmed by a Habitant and managed by its landlord or Seigneur.
The Seigneur (landlord of Seigneury) built the flower mill, the Church, managed all farming and reported back to the Intendant (Talon).
The Habitant (worker on Seigneury) built a house, farmed the land and laboured for his landlord (the Seigneur).

Unlike France, in New France the Seigneur (landlord) had high-status but not super wealth; the Habitant (worker) had his own land, more freedom and income.

Now that Bud is solo, he believes in “having the last laugh” and the upper hand in all situations – this is the result of his defensive nature; he also has a strong sense of fairness and social justice.  Bud is Bud because of his no-nonsense, strong minded Momma – she has instilled these values in him every time she squeezed his arm and got him to listen to her.  Like a flower-to-be, Momma wants Bud to reach his full potential.

    Genre: comedy, drama, historical
Setting: USA, 1930s, Jazz Age, Great Depression (hard economic times, poverty)
Protagonist: Bud Caldwell, 10yrs of age, motherless, in search of father

Bud is all about “self-preservation” and being “on the defense”.  Being alone on the road with his suitcase, we learn Bud is bright, resourceful, creative and determined to locate his father.  His life experiences have already taught him how to “deal” with adults, overcome challenges and get out of “jams” – he has developed a set of “rules” (life skills) to ensure his survival through the journey of life and fend for himself.

    Novel Study: Hatchet

What specific events or scenes in Brian’s story prompt you to think about key life lessons
    For example:
    1.  When Brian first realizes that he is alone and may never be rescued, he recalls his teacher’s words that advise him to get motivated and maintain a positive attitude in the face of an obstacle.  Life involves initiative in order to fulfill any personal goals – without taking a first step and following a plan, there will be no success.

    2.  Following the tornado which destroyed everything, Brian must regroup and start fresh; he decides on “food” first, “thought” second, and “action” third.  Life is full of challenges that involve problem-solving strategies which demand your sense, your planning, and your patience.
