Sept.16

Today we are beginning to conduct our first experiment.  We will repeat the experiment to ensure our results are indeed accurate.  We will follow the scientific method as outlined below.  We will explain what we observe happening using the particle theory of matter chart text pg.12   Each team will submit 1 lab write-up by Friday Sept.19th handwritten or typed (saved to flash to print).


Science Lab 1: Particle Theory of Matter

Purpose:  In this experiment we will dissolve sugar crystals in water, make observations and explain our observations using the particle theory of matter.

Hypothesis (before conducting experiment):
If we dissolve sugar in water at room temperature, then we think… (what do you think will happen & why?)
If we dissolve sugar in cold water, then we think…
If we dissolve sugar in hot water, then we think…
If we dissolve sugar in room temperature water, then we think...

Procedure:  follow step-by-step instructions on pg.13 “Try This” box #1-4.

Observations: (you can create a table in MS Word click insert table, 3 columns, 4 rows, auto fit to contents and type)

Math Art Task: Measurement, Symmetry, Perspective

Using a combination of light pencil, ruler, compass & protractor create any window of your choice (portrait or landscape) that is symmetrical and equal distance on sides/top/bottom to show what can be on the inside of room and outside the window in the distance.  Today, begin with just the measurements to ensure accuracy and symmetry, as per example below:









Bring in some materials to begin conducting your science lab pg.13 with your team.  I will bring in sugar, ice, glass, hot water in thermos, plastic spoon. Make sure your hypothesis is complete.

Geography:




Working collaboratively in a small group of 2-3 maximum, select any 5 landmarks of your choice from the city of Toronto or the Greater Toronto Area (Vaughan, Mississauga, Scarborough) and "box them in" with north-south-west-east street boundaries.  Then, write a little caption about it as we did for the Vaughan Mills example above explaining whether it's part of a residential, commercial, industrial, cultural and/or tourist area.  Landmarks may include parks, community centres, arenas, shopping centres, major restaurants, government offices/buildings, tourist attractions etc.  Think about places you've visited in and around our city.  We are working collaboratively on this task throughout the week in class.
