Science 1.1 Review Handout

1.  Solids, liquids and gases are all made up of particles that can be seen only with a microscope.

2.  These particles have empty spaces between them.

3.  These particles are constantly moving to some degree.

4.  When heated, these particles move faster and spread farther apart from each other; when cooled, these particles move slower and remain closer together.

5.  These particles are attracted to each other; they generally remain close together than fly apart.

In these solids, the particles are very close to one another with little movement and they are very attracted to each other.

The 3 states of matter are solid, liquid and gas.

Rock: solid

Grape Juice: liquid

Air: gas

When heat is applied to a solid the particles move faster and spread farther apart causing a change to liquid form.

All solids have a definite volume because its particles are packed tightly together and they are very attracted to each other.

Liquids have a definite volume but not a definite shape.

Gas does not have a definite volume nor a definite shape.

  2. complete your perspective autumn art in paint
 
 
3.  now that you've read the book & seen both films, begin to think about what dramatic scene from the novel you wish to act out.  get your pdf file to cut, copy and paste the exact dialogue  in ms word for you and your group of choice to practice.
 
4. work on math handout bias in data pg.407 - we will correct it and 3.2 workbook on monday.
 
5.  begin working on your novel study final reading response task below - due wed oct 24th

Some readers have not been satisfied with the story’s ending.  In her quest for independence, Winnie chooses not to drink from the spring but to live the way life was meant to be lived, with death as part of the wheel and flow of things.  She chooses a natural death over living with Jesse in the unnatural state of eternal life.  What are your feelings and thoughts about her final decision?

 

The Tucks and The Man in the Yellow Suit are a contrast of selflessness versus greed.  The Tucks have had to live a very lonely life, never forming meaningful relationships with anyone to ensure no one else suffers the curse of living forever.  The Man in the Yellow Suit is only concerned and obsessed about building his own wealth.  In fact he says the water should be available “only to certain people, people who deserve it. And it will be very, very expensive.”   What are your feelings and thoughts about being selfish versus being selfless in life? about showing empathy/compassion versus apathy/indifference towards others?

Region: an area with similar characteristics based on landforms, climate, precipitation, soil, vegetation, population, culture (language, customs, religion), political boundaries (municipal, provincial, federal), neighborhoods and communities.

Wilderness Region: no human population (forest, barren cold land i.e. tundra)

Physical region: mountains, rock/geologic formations, vegetation, desert examples include the following:

1.2 More About Matter pg.14-16

Purpose: To determine what happens when matter changes state from a solid-liquid-gas.

Hypothesis: If I place a small piece of ice in a plastic sandwich bag, squeeze out most of the air, place it in a microwave oven for 60-90 seconds approximately then I think...(this will happen)

Observations
1.  Through the door of the microwave, I noticed...
2.  After seeing the bag inflate, I removed it from the microwave and noticed...

Analysis:  According to the particle theory, particles in matter move faster and spread farther apart when they are heated.  When matter is cooled, its particles move back closer together.  Knowing this, I learned the ice particles in this experiment...(did what?)  My hypothesis was...(correct, somewhat correct, or incorrect because)
