Sept. 3

TEAM: ______________________________________________

Team Task: Marshmallow Challenge

Goals:  collaboration, creativity & innovation

In a team of 4 and within 1 hour (60minutes), you are to build the tallest free-standing structure you can using as much or as little of the following supplies as you wish:

1. 30 sticks of spaghetti
2. 2m (200cm) of tape
3. 2m (200cm) of string
4. 1 marshmallow on top

Success Criteria:
• Manage your time efficiently
• Brainstorm ideas
• Sketch possible prototype(s)
• Use your knowledge of geometric shapes
• Refer to science textbook structures chapter
• Refer online to Marshmallow Challenge Google Images
• Collaborate: learning together, sharing/respecting ideas
• Shared Responsibility: equal load, responsibility
• Consensus: making decisions together, everyone agreeing
• Interdependence: relying on each other to reach your goal
• Proper use of digital tools during the learning activity

Follow-up:
Document key events of the build process with a few pictures.
What do you predict the height of your structure to be?
What is the actual height of your free-standing structure?
Reflecting upon the success criteria above, what did you do well as team? What could you continue to improve as a team?

The Build Process:

The Results:

Team Turquoise
As a team, we excelled in collaborating and including everyone's ideas.
We will continue to work on our brainstorming and developing a prototype.

Team Blue
As a team, we collaborated well using what we know about geometry, we used google images for ideas and we respectfully shared ideas amongst ourselves.  We thought we could have a built a much stronger foundation.

Team White
As a team, we work well with each other sharing ideas and we managed our time wisely.  We tried many different strategies to support the marshmallow and we continuously strived to make the structure taller and stronger.  Next time, we would refer to our science textbook structures chapter to improve our design.

Team Pink
As a team, we worked well together including everyone's ideas and had fun with the task.  We will continue to listening to and respecting each other's ideas and creativity.

Team Orange
As a team, we worked well to ensure our structure was as stable as possible - we did this by communicating and sharing our ideas while managing our time efficiently.  Next time we could improve the structure by spending more time on brainstorming and sketching a prototype.

Team Green
As a team, we think we did a very good job making decisions together and agreeing on a plan of action.  We think we could have managed our time a little better and made our structure a little more stable.  Otherwise, it was an enjoyable task.

Sept. 2

Welcome Back to St. Simon & to Grade 7!

Review with parents some of our class expectations:

This week we are working in class on a Personal Crest & All About Me collage.  Be creative, make it your own, use whatever media you wish.  Brainstorm ideas, layout, sketch before doing anything, as discussed.

Morning Portable Recess: 9.55-10.10
French:  10.25-10.55
Italian: 12.35-1.05
Afternoon Portable Recess: 2.00-2.15

We will work this week on Math package covering key concepts in Numeracy, Measurement and Patterning. It is not a test.  Some is a review, some will give you an idea of what to expect.  We will work on it little by little each day in class.

landscape it vertically on legal sheet paper as pictured above.

*tip* you could also do 1 sheet per body style then multiply
those total outcomes x 4 different body styles to find total possible car combinations ;)

PROBABILITY FINAL TASK: car configurator

Draw a tree diagram to show all the possible combinations for the new car Tom plans to buy:
-body style choices: sedan, coupe, sportwagon, cabriolet.
-engine choices: 2.0T, 3.0V6, Hybrid
-transmission choices: manual, automatic
-options available: navigation pkg., aero pkg., performance pkg.
-color choices: ruby red, midnight black, rally blue, pearl white

Use your tree diagram to answer the following:
-what are the total possible car combinations Tom can choose from?
-P(Tom buys a red car with a manual transmission)? express as a fraction, decimal & percentage.
-P(Tom buys a car with a V6 engine and performance pkg)? express as a fraction, decimal & percentage.
-P(Tom buys a red cabrio with a manual transmission and navi pkg)? express as a fraction, decimal & percentage.
-P(Tom buys a black coupe with a hybrid engine)? express as a fraction, decimal & percentage.
-P(Tom buys a hybrid sportwagon with navi pkg)? express as a fraction, decimal & percentage.
-P(Tom buys a rally blue sedan with manual transmission and aero pkg)? express as fraction, decimal & percentage.

Gr.7s, work cooperatively with one another and be courteous to your substitute teacher - no negative reports!

As discussed Friday, today is your final day to submit the following completed tasks:
1.  History Prezi British vs French
2.  Health Prezi Sugar Consumption
3.  MS Word typed file letter to Mr. Mark Kelley
4.  If you did not submit fraction quiz on Friday please do so today on my desk with others in textbook.
There is no extension on any of these tasks since we've been working on them for 1+ week now.  Use your time wisely, wrap them completely up today and email to stsimongr7@gmail.com by end of day.
