Novel Study: Hatchet theme

Brian recalls the words of his former teacher, Mr. Perpich.  Perpich always encouraged his students, when faced with a challenge, to “stay positive” and “get motivated” because the best “asset” they had was themselves.  Their natural talents and abilities were of value.

In Seedfolks, Wendell was motivated to help others and transform the garden rather than dwell on the loss of his family – his positivity was of value to his overall well-being and that of others in the community.  Wendell had to think about what he had vs what he did not and make a decision.

Now that Brian is stranded alone, he has to decide whether to give up or find the strength, determination, initiative (taking responsibility & control of situation) and ingenuity within himself to survive in the face of death.  Brian has to think about what he has vs what he doesn’t and make a decision.

If we have an internal willingness and desire to succeed, then with a good plan coupled with a fierce determination and positive attitude, anything is possible.  In life we have to realize the time to “help ourselves” and “take ownership” without any prompting or direction from anyone else.
