Character Profile Checkpoint: The Alchemyst

What have we learned about and feel about Nicholas Flamel and John Dee at this point in the novel?

Nicholas Flamel
·        protagonist of novel, 700+ years old
·        he’s a master alchemist, a man of science, guided by chemistry as opposed to being a simple magician
·        he’s teaching and developing a new generation of men of science: alchemysts, astronomers, mathematicians
·        expert in the Codex – a book dealing with the secrets of immortality
·        Codex stolen from him (except last 2 pgs) & his wife Perenelle kidnapped
·        his wing-woman is Scattach (Scatty) a mythological warrior Queen and the support of the twins, Josh & Sofie
·        Wise, experienced, cautious/prudent, powerful, caring, as an alchemyst he is dedicated to preserving life, not destroying it – even in the case of the rats.

John Dee
·        antagonist, opposing character to Flamel
·        he was Flamel’s best apprentice; was very well trained
·        consultant/advisor to Queen Elizabeth I
·        expert in scrying – controlling all the senses of rats and crows
·        evil, repulsive, traitor, arrogant, selfish, vile – wants rats/crows to “utterly kill” the twins + uses Perenelle as a bargaining chip/as leverage to get the complete Codex
aspirations of world domination because with the Codex he could “remake the world” as Flamel points out

Working with a partner, identify with pictures 10-12 common tools/objects/structures/systems that have been ergonomically designed and briefly explain what design element built into it allows you to work more effectively, comfortably and safely?
