History Chapter 4: Struggle For Control
Key Ideas
This chapter is about the conflict between France & Britain as each country struggled to gain control of the area now known as Canada.
European Monarchs desire for power and wealth caused conflict in Europe & North America.
Conflict between the British & French in North America centred on control of key fur trade areas.
Both British & French built many forts to control and protect important fur trade locations.
Acadia (present-day Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Quebec) became British as a result of the Treaty of Utrecht.
The British defeated the French and captured Quebec at the Plains of Abraham.  British military rule was enforced.
Treaty of Paris eventually ended the British/French war in Europe.
Royal Proclamation 1763 would make Quebec British through assimilation.

Quebec Act 1774 would make Quebec both French & British through biculturalism.
