Canadian History Review: French Colonization & Aboriginal Interaction

Governor of New France is impulsive and launches a surprise campaign against Iroquois in January (he has absolutely no experience dealing with a cold Canadian winter and is not prepared) as a result, hundreds of his soldiers die from the cold.  Eventually French sign a peace treaty with Iroquois for 20yrs

King Louis offers large estates __________________ for his New France administrators.  King Louis sends young, poor, abandoned girls ______________________ to populate New France by getting married and bearing children.

Math Skype Problem of The Week

The length and width remain the same in volume calculation before and after water freezes.  

The depth (height) of the water changes.

   After freezing, the depth (height) increases from 100% to 110%.  

   Therefore, the depth of the water will be 110% of the height.

   h=38.5cm ÷ 1.1    (110÷100)
   h=35cm

   The container can be filled with water to a depth of 35cm so that when it            freezes the ice will not go over the top of the container.



Religion:

The intermediate classes at St. Simon participated in a board wide initiative titled "anchor of hope" to represent the 2013/2014 theme of the year of HOPE. Since there were 4 intermediate classes, each class was put in charge of a letter and the letter was divided among the students in puzzle pieces. The students had to draw anything that reminded them of hope. Mr. Di Croce's class was put in charge of the letter "P" and this colourful art piece below is the result of the student's hard work and creativity.

1. What were the goals of colonization by a mother country?

To control newly claimed land in order to supply inexpensive raw materials/products back to the mother country, as well as expand their power. This was done in order to create a profit through manufactured goods and it became a big part of mercantilism.

2. What industries was a mother country interested in developing in the new colony?

The industries that were developed were; fishing industry, fur trade industry and precious metals and jewels.

3. Where was the 1st French settlement located and what was its purpose? Who was it lead by?

First French settlement was on Ste. Croix Island in Arcadia in order to create a monopoly on the fur trade in Canada. Samuel de Champlain lead this initiative.

4. What did Champlain build? where and why?

Champlain established a settlement in the St. Lawrence valley in order to get better access to the Native people and the fur trade.

5. What relationship did he have with the Aboriginals? Why?

Champlain had a business alliances with the Aboriginals for the fur trade. This was done in order to share resources as well as use each other as military  allies. 

6. What was the goal of the coureurs de bois (runners of the woods)?

They were entrepeneurs that had to travel deep into the forest in order to get tehir hands on beaver pelts, as well as live with the Aboriginals and learn their way of life.
