Unit 1: Place & Location

 

1. A place or location refers to your position on our planet Earth.

 

2. Your home address is located in a neighborhood or residential area which forms the community  of Humberlea.

 

3. Humberlea boundaries include Sheppard Ave. on the north, the CN railway on the east, the Humber River on the west and Oak Street on the south side, home to Satin Finish hardwood & Visioneering lighting manufacturers.

 

4. Stores and shopping plazas are located in a business or commercial area.

 

5. The borough or village or town of Weston is part of the city or municipality of Toronto. 

 

6. Toronto is part of the province of Ontario.

 

7. Cultural areas or district such as Little Italy, Chinatown or Greektown are commonplace in a multi-cultural city such as ours.

 

8. Ontario is part of the nation/country of Canada.  Besides provinces, countries may be also divided into states, regions or territories.

 

9. Canada is part of the continent of North America.

 

10. North America is part of the Northern Hemisphere.

 

11. The Earth is part of our solar system or Milky Way Galaxy.

 

12. A sketch of an area, neighborhood, or major road intersection as you picture it in your mind is called a mental map.

 

13. Factories and manufacturing plants are located in industrial areas.

 

14. Farming, agriculture and livestock are located in rural areas.

 

15. The streets of our city are like a grid running north-south and intersect with streets running east-west forming quadrants of neighborhoods/communities.

 

16. G.P.S. stands for Global Positioning System.  It pinpoints your exact location on earth using lines of longitude and latitude and landmarks.

 

17. A precise spot on earth with clearly defined boundaries is called an absolute location. 

 

18. An estimation/approximation of a spot on Earth is called a relative location.

 

19. People decide to locate places in certain areas for economic reasons (e.g. access to highways, landforms, bodies of water) and social reasons (e.g. population, culture, language).

 

20. Crossroads shopping centre is located on the south-east corner of highway 401 and Weston road.

 

21. St. Simon school is located on the north side of Wallasey Ave. on the east side of Weston Rd., just north of Walsh/Albion.

 

22. One would travel west on Wallasey from St Simon in order to reach Weston Road.

 

23. One would travel north on Weston road from St Simon to reach St. Basil’s on Starview blvd or the C.S. community centre.

• your landscape backgrounds are all looking great - throughout the week you will add the clouds, buildings, water ripples & ducks.
• we will begin summer highlights prezi presentations tomorrow and try to wrap them up by Friday Sept. 14th (see rubric in your binder for success criteria)
• your geography map of the Humberlea/Pelmo Park community on powerpoint can be handed in no later than Friday Sept. 14th; remember to add compass & title as discussed today.
• your novel study follow-ups 1 thru 3 can be handed in no later than Friday Sept. 14th.
• if you need anything printed, bring usb stick and I will print from it - otherwise email to stsimongr7@gmail.com and i will print for you.
• we will continue correcting math 1.5 powers tomorrow; corrections so far below:

• novel study below - as mentioned in class today, your reading responses must be at least 2-3 sentences in length; a 1 short sentence answer is not enough to answer the question properly at this grade level.  take your time to complete follow-up 1-3 with care and detail over the weekend - i will let you know on monday when to hand in all of them together.

art prep for monday

as discussed, get yourself ready with the following painting supplies for monday from dollar store:
-red, yellow, white, black acrylic paint
-brushes thick/thin
-canvas panels any size you wish
-bring in an old t-shirt to cover your top while you paint with acrylic
