Reading: novel climax/falling action
- Grackle is so hungry for wealth that Aaron managed to convince her Lord Tom (a rogue, wanted criminal) is of nobility, possibly a king.
- As a result, Grackle lures Lord Tom to cellar with hope of holding him hostage for ransom while Aaron escapes inn on Ragman's wagon
- Grackle suspects Aaron of lying to her since he can't ignite fireplace but remains delusional about Lord Tom's identity
- Beginning of falling action: Aaron convinces Ragman that it was Grackle who pick-pocketted him and they return to inn only to find both Grackle & Lord Tom frozen solid since neither could ignite fire
- Aaron's mom is present at inn

- while in search for mom set off to Craftsbury, Aaron meets Ragman, suspicious character takes him to foreign place, Half-a-Moon Inn and leaves him there with owner Ms Grackle
- Grackle learns Aaron is mute and lost but, like Ragman, doesn't seem to help him
- Grackle is vile, despicable, manipulative, utterly dishonest, violent, thief/grifter conartist using inn as a front to steal from guests
- Grackle has powers to peer into peoples' dreams and read their thoughts
- She imprisons Aaron and puts him to work for her as her "silent" partner in crime; she takes advantage of an innocent child for her personal gain.

- protagonist (main character): Aaron
- antagonist is the character or challenge faced by the protagonist
- protagonist vs antagonist results in conflict which sets story in motion
- conflict starts rising action - events in chronological order leading up to highpoint/main action scene known as the climax
- 1st rising action (bottom rung of staircase): Aaron, mute, left home alone on eve of 12th birthday by mom who is travelling into town of Craftsbury; warns son to stay away from woods, closer to coast; Aaron is anxious and tense.
- 2nd rising action: learning to fend for himself, Aaron is faced with an unexpected early snowfall and begins to panic, worry and speculate about his mother's whereabouts, concerned about her safe return home Aarons leaves to find her.
