Feb 27 Task Tracker FYI

Tomorrow, I will be returning some tasks that have been graded.  However, a large number of tasks remain incomplete and past due.  In the interest of starting term 2 on a good footing, I strongly suggest that everyone take more ownership for their own learning.  Ensure you have each task below completed, that is, submitted and graded.  Strive to be more diligent and consistent ;)

Feb 27 The Breadwinner Movie Trailer Task

Have a look at these student-created movie trailers for The Breadwinner

Using Movie Maker or Photo Story we can attempt to create a movie trailer to promote the Deborah Ellis's novel and showcase the journey and challenges faced by the protagonist, Parvana, and/or any woman in Afghanistan.

Watch a few current movie trailers to pick up key elements that are always included in any promo trailer i.e. movie studio intro, coming summer 2013, based on best-selling novel, movie stars, credits, appropriate background music, questions that the movie will answer, suspenseful scene that will generate curiosity etc.

Groups of 3 maximum.

Feb 27 U7 Test Transformational Geometry

Complete questions below on coordinate plane.

  • Name new coordinates

Q3.
  • Plot pentagon ABCDE with A(-1,5) B(1,5) C(-2,3) D(2,3) E(0,1)
  • Trace pentagon ABCDE on paper to create manipulative
  • Rotate (turn) pentagon ABCDE clockwise 270 degrees about point E
  • Plot rotated pentagon A'B'C'D'E'
  • Name new coordinates

Feb 25 reminders

Complete carpet tessellation in geometer's sketchpad (tomorrow we color print then skype our samples with St. Maria Goretti who challenged us to this task) begin with 1 square design, select all line segments and all points, translate 180 degrees (fixed angle) and an appropriate fixed distance (between 2-7) to create 2 side-by-side squares, select all line segments and all points again, translate 90 degrees (fixed angle) to create another 2 side-by-side squares directly above these ones for a total now of 4, copy/paste into Paint and use primary colors to fill, save as jpeg, copy/paste jpeg into PowerPoint and stretch to fit whole page ready to print in color.  Sample below:

  • Stained glass Prezi wrap up tomorrow.
Well done Sarah :)

Well done Francesca, Angela & Megan :)

  • If you have not submitted either novel study questions and/or math congruent shapes tables, please do so for a grade - this is your responsibility to fulfill.
  • Begin working on math transformational geometry review text pg.264 1-10

Feb 22 Reminders

Weekend Reminders
  • Great participation on the skype with the other school - hopefully it will continue and be a positive learning experience for everyone.
  • On Monday, following Instrumental Music & French, we will begin sharing our stained glass window Prezis with the class; have a look at the success criteria on the blog.
  • Monday is the very last day that I will accept your novel study task - it was due today and only 20% of the class submitted it.
  • On Monday, your math table of congruent/similar triangles will be collected.
  • Please ensure that by now you have a copy of the novel and digital editions downloaded on your personal computer so you can continue reading

Feb 22 Skype Challenge 2: Tessellation

Try you hand at creating the carpet tessellation design in geometer's sketchpad

once you create the first full square (as pictured above) you will need to translate it 3 times following this sequence:

fixed distance 2-3 so they are exactly side by side
fixed angle 180 degrees

fixed distance 2-3
fixed angle 90 degrees

fixed distance 2-3
fixed angle 90 degrees
