Chapter 3 questions & answers BREADWINNER

Questions:
1.  What does the author want to convey (tell us) by showing that the soldiers beat up Parvana, Nooria and her mother?
2.  What is important about Parvana, as a woman, having the courage to do what she did?

1.  What the author is trying to tell us by showing that the soldiers beat up Parvana, Nooria and her mother is that Afghanistan has an unfair society. Also, it is a lot different from where we are coming from. We also see the author trying to show how strict the political system in Afghanistan is. In Canada, people are not allowed to treat each other this way. The author wants to show the difference between a place like Afghanistan and a place in North America like Canada.

2.  The important thing about Parvana, as a woman having the courage to do what she did is that she is not like the other girls. She is brave and confident. Parvana's feet were swollen and in pain and she still had the courage to try to aid her mother in pain. Girls can do exactly what boys can and should not be treated any differently, and this is the message sent.

The Survival strategy Breadwinner chapter 3 & reminders

survival: IMAGINE THE FOLLOWING SCENARIO:

You are in the position of Nooria and her sisters, brother and mother. If you are a boy, imagine that boys are not allowed to leave their houses just as girls cannot (or they will be bombed or beaten and imprisoned).

You are running out of food, your house is a mess, your baby brother is crying and your mom can no longer take care of him because she is injured and traumatized. Your father is still in jail. It is up to you to decide how you are going to deal with the situation.

In your groups, come up with a list of 4 steps you would take in order to proceed to get out of this rut.

Think about these questions in your answers:
·       what is important to do next? What are the most important needs?
·       what can you bring to help you in your journey?
·       How can you find food? What kind of food is available?
·       How can you support each other?
·       Where can you hide/ run to?
